the diodes perform two things:
1) they are rectifiers; and
2) they provide AGC control for the radio: in the case of a PNP transistor, the higher its base potential, the lower its Ic, and the lower its gain. so for strong stations (which generates large amptitude rf signal on the transistor's collector), the diodes lower the radio's gain, and vice versa for weaker stations.
for npn transistors, its Ic / gain goes down as the base's potential goes down. so your diodes should be connected so that it generates a negative incremental voltage on the npn-transistor's base, in order to have agc.
hope that helps. |
