active loads like a ccs have a few issues:
1) they need voltage drops to work. so your positive cannot swing to rail. that causes output inefficiencies;
2) they are generally unstable.
the 2nd point is where a bootstrap comes in handy: a bootstrap loses its gain at higher frequency, making them a great help for stability.
I have used all but bootstraps in my amps and have been very happy with them.
AKSA, one of the most widely built amps, also uses bootstrap for exactly the same reason. |
